Garuda Indonesia's Clarification about Picture Restriction on Plane

The uploading mistake lasted for about an hour before it was taken down. Without clear reason, somehow Indonesian top airline, Garuda Indonesia (GI), uploaded a picture that contained a restriction of taking pictures during their flight service for all its customers on Twitter.

Despite the mistake, the airline finally uploaded the revised version in the form of suggestion, instead of restriction for all its customers.

Previously, GI accidentally circulated a restriction of taking pictures on the plane for all its customers. Also, GI gave rights for its flight attendants and crews to use “assertive” language to warn the passengers taking pictures. Moreover, GI also included sanctions for the passengers who still would not comply with the restrictions, however, it was unclarified.

According to GI’s VP Corporate Secretary, M. Ikhsan Rosan, the restriction was not supposed to be circulated yet since it was still being scrutinized by the internal board members of GI. Rosan then clarified further that it did not mean to restrict customers from taking pictures or selfies on the plane.

Taking pictures is still allowed, however, customer needs to respect crews, flight attendants and other passengers’ privacy.

Taking refuge under the legal reason, Rosan called the suggestion was important because it complies under the Laws of Electronic Information & Transaction, Aviation Laws, and other Laws.

The restriction hailed reactions from the readers, the majority was negative and somehow funny. They stated that the restriction all began from an Instagram Story of GI’s passengers, Rius Vernandes, through his IG account @rius.vernandes on Saturday (13/7). Claiming himself as a flight reviewer, he exposed a “hand-written” Business-class menu on the plane. Later on, he clarified that GI had already apologized for the incident and provided the standard menu card.

Nonetheless, on Tuesday (16/7), Rius Vernandes posted a picture on his Instagram account that he and his girlfriend, Elwiana Monica, are facing police summons regarding the Story issue, threatening both with defamation charge. The netizens are fuming even worse against GI. They called GI "irresponsible" and "ruthless" for trying to silence influencers and reviewers from exposing their flaws.

Some people also criticized how GI changed its restriction to suggestion, reflecting that they were rushing and did not contemplate the policy well. Even a well-known online transportation network company, Grab Indonesia, was taking advantage of the scene and made a parody out of it on its Twitter account.
