G7 summit in Hiroshima to open soon
The summit of the world's Group of Seven leading industrial nations is just about to open in Hiroshima. Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio will welcome the leaders at the Peace Memorial Park.
They will witness firsthand the legacy of the world's first nuclear attack.
Kishida hopes to highlight the horror of nuclear weapons in the city that was the site of the bombing in 1945.
The leaders will also visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum where they will see displays of photos and other materials that survived the devastation.
Full-fledged talks begin in the afternoon. Ten sessions are scheduled through Sunday.
Some will involve leaders from non-G7 countries and regional groups. Major agenda items include the global economy, the war in Ukraine, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as food and energy.
Kishida is hoping to demonstrate the G7's unity in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's rapidly expanding global influence.
