Flood in Bangladesh, 114 dead

Currently, Bangladesh is being stricken by natural disasters. For about 17 days, people in 325 unions out of 2,117 unions in 74 upazilas (administrative regions) in 28 districts of Bangladesh had to be displaced due to the flooding caused by torrential, continuous monsoon rains and rapid upstream flow in the four major gorges of the country. The flood’s victim toll rose up to 114 people.

According to the report from Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 10 people died yesterday. Since the flooding, 95 people drowned in the areas affected by the flood.

Some people are also stranded due to the flood and about tens of thousands of houses were inundated. Even worse, they are most likely exposed to the water-borne diseases carried by the major flood such as diarrhea, respiratory problem, skin problem, etc. Not to mention, other disasters that could happen.

Nearly 500,000 people are stranded due to the flood which began on 10 July, and about 14,781 people are at risk of water-borne disease. About 5,571 people are suffering from diarrhea, and 1,610 people are suffering from respiratory disease. 1 person died from the respiratory problem.

About 1,905 people are suffering from skin diseases, 479 from eye inflammation and 434 are injured due to the flood.

Even in the flood, Bangladeshi people need to be careful of certain mishaps. Eight people were struck by lightning, leaving one 1 alive. The flood caused some dangerous animals such as snake to roam around freely. About 56 people are bitten by snakes, 8 of which died.

About 4,695 people are suffering and 3 people died due to unknown causes. Due to the flood, farmers lost more than US$40 million worth of agricultural products and the number could be higher as the flood continues.

- HUMANITARIAN EFFORT –

Meanwhile, the European Commission had prepared about €8.5 million worth of assistance package for ASEAN and South Asian countries devastated by disasters. €1.5 million of which was prepared for Bangladesh and India.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society in Bangladesh had deployed about 700 volunteers, 100 of them are staff, to aid people affected by the flood.

Also, the Bangladeshi government was said to have provided US$543,684 for the house rebuilding. Currently, there are 1,324 shelter centers with 2,451 medical teams in the affected areas. However, access to the shelters was quite difficult due to the flood and lack of communication.
