The late Mia Kurihara who passed away in January 2019

Father Who Assaulted His Daughter Released From Custody

A father who sexually assaulted his daughter  got released from the custody on Tuesday, according to the local government. Earlier this year in January, a 10-year-old girl had died in the bathroom of their house in Noda, Chiba Prefecture.

The daughter, Mia Kurihara, was previously taken to protective custody on November 7, 2017. She was taken to the protective custody after she filled in a questionnaire given by the teacher, where she wrote that she's been bullied by her father.

During her stay at the custody, she revealed that her father,  Yuichiro Kurihara, would pull her pants down in the middle of the night. If she refuses to do so, her father would tell her other family members could hear her. Mia also revealed that her father would cover her mouth and nose when she's asleep.

The doctor at the custody diagnosed that Mia has been sexually assaulted, and she suffered post-traumatic stress disorder. However, when Mia said that she wanted to go home, the center concluded that the abuse is not serious. They ended her protection on December 27, 2017 and she could go back to her relatives on February 28, 2018.

The national and local prefectural government are now investigating the fact that Mia was sent back to her family at that time. Not only her father, it is said that her mother, Nagisa Kurihara is indicated to assist the assault done by her husband. Welfare officials are criticized for not being able to give Mia a protection after she was released from the center.
