Exercise Eagle Indopura: Indonesia-Singapore’s measure to tackle terrorism

SURABAYA - As neighboring countries, it is a must to unite to war against terrorism. Indonesia and Singapore agreed on this thing. On the 25th edition of bilateral security and military cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore, Exercise Eagle Indopura is being held to exercise on certain terrorism's scenarios.

The exercise, firstly held in 1974, was held between the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL).

The military exercise between 2 countries is held for a week, from Thursday (18/7) last week to Thursday (25/7). Not only to tackle terrorism but also the exercise is meant to test both the navies’ anti-surface and anti-air naval warfare maneuvers.

On the first day of the exercise, the Commander of RSN fleet, Rear-Admiral Aaron Beng addressed the importance of maintaining a harmonious military relationship between Indonesia and Singapore to protect the integral maritime trade routes of 2 countries. Beng also hoped that the exercise would deepen the military relations between 2 countries in years to come.

TNI AL deployed its latest and most advanced naval weapon units such as Diponegoro-class frigate KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda-367, Fatahillah-class missile corvette KRI Fatahillah-361, and a CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft.

For RSN, it tested Formidable-class frigate RSS Steadfast, Victory-class missile corvette RSS Vigour, and Independence-class littoral mission vessel RSS Justice in the naval exercise.

There are 3 phases in the naval exercise. First phase or “harbor phase” dealt with planning coordination in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia; second phase or the “sea phase” was conducted in Karimata Strait, Java Sea, and Singapore Strait; the last phase will be conducted onshore in Singapore also as the closing ceremony and discussion for the exercise.

On Tuesday (23/7), Miscex (Miscellaneous Exercise) 235 closed the second phase, which was held from Saturday (20/7) to Tuesday, of the naval exercise held in Karimata Strait. The joint exercise covered communication and coordination exercises on naval security before moving on to the third phase.
