EU locks itself down amid COVID-19

In order to contain the pandemic outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the European Union (EU) announced that it will lock itself down from the world for 30 days.

Speaking on Thursday, German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said that the EU countries all agreed to restrict tourists both regular and professional from other countries for 30 days. Angela said that Germany will implement the policy as soon as possible.

The EU countries will coordinate with each other to ensure the deal will be implemented in order to contain the COVID-19 from spreading even further in the bloc. Starting from Italy, the European continent is now known as the new epicenter of the COVID-19, originating from Wuhan, Hubei Province, Central China, late 2019.

Due to the pandemic, the EU Summit which will be held next week will be held through videoconference. On Tuesday, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, confirmed the news.

The World Health Organization urged strong and firm actions from the EU in battling the COVID-19. So far, there are over 71,000 positive cases in the EU, 3,330 of which passed away. Italy (27,980), Spain (11,178), and France (6,573), Germany (6,012), and Switzerland (2,650) are the countries hardest hit by the COVID-19.

WHO’s Regional Director for the EU, Hans Kluge, said that all countries, without any exception, should be involved to suppress the virus by quarantine, isolation, and social distancing.
