Erick Thohir should not let Ari Askhara 'off the hook': Bamsoet

The Speaker of People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Bambang Soesatyo, generally known by his nickname “Bamsoet”, urged the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Erick Thohir, to criminalize the former President Director of Garuda Indonesia, I Gusti Ngurah Askhara, generally known as Ari Askhara, regarding the case of smuggling Harley Davidson motorcycle and Brompton bicycle on plane.

Speaking to Antara on Saturday, Bamsoet said that not only dismissal but also Erick needs to investigate and bring the matter to the court since smuggling is considered a crime. Therefore, as the boss of a BUMN, Ari Ashkara cannot get away with it easily.

Previously on Thursday, the SOEs Minister – in a joint conference with Indonesia’s Finance Minister, Sri Mulyani Indrawati - had dismissed Ari Askhara from his post when the Indonesian Customs found on Monday the high-end contraband in the forms of disassembled Harley Davidson motorcycle and Brompton foldable bicycle on a new Garuda Airbus A330-990 from France.

Since Garuda Indonesia is publicly listed, an extraordinary shareholders meeting (RUPSLB) is required to formally dismiss Ari Askhara. Besides, Garuda Indonesia’s board of commissioners had decided to temporarily dismiss all executives who directly or indirectly involved in the case.

Regarding the name of the temporarily dismissed executives, the board of commissioners declined to reveal.

However, the Jakarta Police (Polda Metro Jaya) hasn’t dug into the case just yet. Jakarta Police Spokesperson, Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus, said that the case is still under investigation by the Customs.
