Elon: All companies developing AI should be regulated

CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, said that before entering mass production, artificial intelligence (AI) should better be regulated. Not willing to be labeled “hypocrite”, Elon also said that Tesla’s AI will also be included.

Tweeting on 18 February 2020, Elon’s statement came after a review of OpenAI by MIT Technology. Elon bashed OpenAI, which he also cofounded, for shifting from its noble goal – to develop and distribute safe and ethical AI for all – to a money mongering company driven by good image and income.

In 2018, Elon left OpenAI in order to avoid conflicts with the machine learning tech used in Tesla’s autonomous vehicles. Meanwhile, Elon admitted that he stayed as a donor to the “non-profit” organization.

Tesla’s CEO also said that the government should spend more time to gain insight into AI and other potentially dangerous technologies.

While also implementing AI in its product, Elon repeatedly expressed his concern about the potential dangers lurking behind AI’s development. Once in 2014, Elon tweeted that AI could be more dangerous than nukes. In the same year, while speaking at an MIT Aeronautics and Astronautics Symposium, Elon referred to AI as mankind’s biggest existential threat, and humans should watch out.

Elon jokingly pictured AI as a demon summoned by innocent mankind. While mankind believes that it could control AI like controlling the demons, the story turned upside down.
