Either Electricity or Cigarette Causing Notre Dame Fire: Prosecutor

PARIS - Almost 3 months since fire consumed most part of Notre Dame church in Paris, a glimpse of certainty finally emerged. On Wednesday (26/6) in the first evaluation of the cause of the fire, French prosecutor, Remy Heitz, made a statement, clearing the world’s suspicion, that nobody actually caused the fire.

On 15 April, a fire sparked inside Notre Dame cathedral which consumed the steeple. Fortunately, most of the church was saved, including 2 main towers that have lasted for ages. The church has seen historical events, from the French Revolution to World War II. On June 15, the first mass following 2 months after the fire was held in simplicity.

Heitz pointed out that there was no criminal intention within the fire. However, there were 2 main possible causes of the fire. First, the badly snubbed cigar butts that caused fire, or malfunction electricity. What is left is to investigate the negligence. Unfortunately, to back his statement, Heitz has nothing to prove, adding that the hypotheses were based on 100 interviews with witnesses.

With the statement, the investigation for the negligence has commenced. Three magistrates were endowed with the authority to charge anyone suspected with the suspicion.

To back the cigar hypothesis, La Bres Freres, a French scaffolding company, testified that some workers at the church smoked frequently, which might be the cause. However, they also denied the claim that it was the main cause of the fire.

Until now, French president, Emmanuel Macron, stated an initiative to rebuild what remained from the fire, and by 5 years, it has to be done. Most French people want Notre Dame to be rebuilt in the same fashion as it was before the fire. The reconstruction legislation is currently halted, but it was expected to pass in the upcoming July.
