Earthquake in Banda Sea, No Tsunami Threat

An earthquake happened in Banda Sea this morning, on June 24. It is reported that the earthquake magnitude scale is 7,7.

The Head of Geophysical Station of Kupang Robert Owen Wahyu, told Kompas that the earthquake happened at 10.53 a.m. local time. The location of the earthquake is at the 6,51 degree south latitude and 129,27 degree east longitude.

The center of the earthquake is at 245 north east of southwest Maluku, with depth of 231 kilometers. However, there was no tsunami threat after the earthquake. Although the earthquake happened near Maluku, but people in Kupang and East Nusa Tenggara could feel it. It is reported that people were running out of their houses and looking for safe places.

An advertorial manager, Yoppy, conducted an interview with Kompas. According to her, people were running out from the office because of the earthquake. As soon as the earthquake strikes, she revealed that people were running to safe themselves, to which she didn’t count for how many minutes the earthquake happened. However, as far as she knows, no buildings were damaged.

Not only in Indonesia, people in Darwin also felt the earthquake. It is reported that the tremors were felt in the top-end city. People were immediately evacuated, but The Bureau of Meteorology stated at 1 p.m. local time that there was no tsunami threat.
