E-TLE for motorbike aims for reckless, smoking riders

Jakarta Police is considering punishing motorcycle rider smoking while riding their motorcycle, as electronic traffic law enforcement (E-TLE) is implemented starting February. For now, the traffic violations detected by the E-TLE are conventional such as not wearing a helmet, using cellphones, signs violation, traffic violations, and entering TransJakarta lane.

Since the implementation, the E-TLE had caught more than 300 traffic violations. On 1 February, there were 167 violations and 174 on 2 February.

Moreover, the police are still developing E-TLE cameras so that they can detect smoking riders as one of the violations.

Starting Monday, E-TLE for motorcycle riders has been implemented. About 12 E-TLE cameras are ready to be used to detect traffic violations done by the riders. For now, these cameras are installed on Sudirman – Thamrin roads and TransJakarta’s Corridor 6 lanes.

Regarding the mechanism, the E-TLE for motorcycles has the same mechanism and procedure as E-TLE for cars. When the cameras detect a violation, it will capture the moment plus the vehicle’s plate as evidence.

After that, the police will send the ticket and photos as evidence to the violators according to the address registered in the vehicle’s plate and vehicle registration certificate (STNK). If they fail to pay the fine, their STNKs will be banned.

Regarding the fine, it depends on the traffic violations listed in Law No. 22 of 2009 on Traffic and Road Transportation.
