Driver's Licenses with New Era Name of Reiwa Issued

TOKYO - Driver’s licenses issued or renewed have included the name Reiwa. As reported before, the new era started when Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne on May 1st 2019. However, due to the extended holiday period, licenses were being issued for the first time on May 5th 2019.

Many drivers visited the Samezu driver's license center of the Metropolitan Police Department in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward to take renewal and other procedures. The drivers there blissfully received their new licenses. A 26-year-old company employee stated, “It finally feels like the era name has changed.”

Hiroyuki Anzai, 22, a job-hunting university student also expressed his gratitude after receiving the new driver’s license.  "The driver's license is essential for me as I want a sales job.  With my birthday in April, I came here to renew the license just after the Reiwa era started." He also added, “Watching the new license, I really felt the change of era from Heisei to Reiwa.”

The new driver’s licenses which include the name Reiwa are welcomed by the citizens in other areas as well. A woman in her 20s said that it feels good to see Reiwa on her license. She said she believes she will gradually get used to the new name, and she will continue to drive safely.
