Dr. John Passed Away at 77

The world lost yet another star yesterday. Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., widely known by his stage name as Dr. John, passed away today at 77 years old, due to heart attack, according to the news from his official Twitter account. Regarding the detail of his death, no official statement has been made from his family.

Born in New Orleans in 1941, Dr. John, has won 6 Grammy Awards, was a creative musician for blending various genre of music into his own style. He rose to fame in 1950s, when he gained popularity for being a session singer in New Orleans.

The boom exploded when he released his first album “Gris-Gris” in 1968. He looked up to King Oliver & Louis Armstrong as his inspiration in music. In 1973, he released a lifetime hit titled “Right Place, Wrong Time”.

During his musical career, he crossed paths with notable musicians such as Ringo Starr of Beatles, Eric Clapton, and even Mick Jagger.

Dr. John was once addicted to heroin, but in December 1989, he managed to get rid of the addiction with the help of an organization called “Narcotics Anonymous”. He was then announced himself free of addiction for the rest of his life.

In 2011, John Legend, a famous pop singer, introduced Dr. John to be included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Dr. John’s musical influence was undoubtedly great, since many artists paid tribute to his music and his innovation in blending genre proven to last a lifetime, an innovation cannot be replaced by any artist of present time.
