Doubts over the 2020 Summer Olympics grow

In less than four months, Japan is set to be the host of the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. However, as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is running wild in the country, the doubts are looming large.

The opposition against the commencement of the Summer Olympics in Japan is growing. They demand that the Japanese government will consider the lives of those involved. The sports events all around the world are put on halt. Even the President of the U.S, Donald Trump, said that the Summer Olympics should be put on hold.

However, the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, and the chief of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, repeatedly said that they would continue to proceed with the Olympic torch relay on 24 July.

While Japan has seen a few cases, 814 positive cases and 24 deaths, the Japanese people worry about the sudden surge of foreign tourists.

They said that with the temporal visa ban, Japan would not receive any visitors from the world. Then, it is better not to hold it, said the people. According to a poll taken by the NHK on 6 – 9 March, about 45 people were against the Summer Olympics, while only 40 percent were down for it.

Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, said that it is not in the plan to cancel the Olympics; yet, the decision lies in the hand of the IOC. The IOC itself said that it is adhering to what the World Health Organization (WHO) said regarding possible postponements. But, about the cancelation, it is a different matter.
