Do's and don'ts for fresh graduates when applying for a job

After studying for four years in a university, you finally obtain your bachelor's degree and are ready to start being a responsible adult. In other words, you are ready to work. For some, they cannot wait to start working.

However, after several times of applying here and there, they realize one thing: Job seeking is hard. There are requirements and background checks done by the HR department of a company for that. Therefore, we are here to guide you on what to do and what not to do if you want to land a job as soon as possible.

DOs:

1. RESEARCH
You have seen one company, and you are interested in working with them. However, first things first, you need to look for information regarding a company. Open your browser, check their credibility. If a company will do a background check on you, then you should do the same.

2. PASSION
You graduated from a Design major. However, the company is opening vacancies only for accountants and SEO optimizers. What to do? Will you apply for that as well? Make sure that the job you are applying for is the right one for you.

Of course, you don’t want to waste your time doing a job that you don’t like. Not only will it make you quit faster but it will also tarnish your reputation. So, make sure you think twice about your passion and the job you are seeking.

3. BACKGROUND CHECK
As we said earlier, companies nowadays do a background check on their candidates. Maybe, the candidates have said or posted nasty things or improper things online. As a candidate, before applying, you might want to “wash” your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter from any improper posts.

It is not without reason, but companies think that their employees represent their images both directly and indirectly. And, if they cannot behave online, they surely cannot behave in real life.

4. CV
If you have done the three steps above, time to submit your CV. But, what kind of CV are we talking about? Make a brief CV and cover letter telling about how passionate you are about this position, and why are you the best candidate for the job. Don’t forget to add your strongest point in it, and emphasize it. Enchant the HR manager with the skills and attitude and be the most prominent among other candidates!

Now, we have covered the DOs, time to talk about what you should not do:

1. LOSING CONNECTION
You don’t have much connection by the time you graduate? That’s too bad. Networking might help you in getting a job, talking about references. However, it is okay. You might have been too busy with your studies until you could not join any organization.

Therefore, start joining one or two. From the circle, you may get workshops, seminars, and symposiums. You may attend one or two and get your network from there.

2. GET TOO COMFY
You are a funny person? That’s okay. However, keep that attitude within yourselves. We recommend that while your cover letter is brief, do not put any funny remarks there. We are trying to keep it formal here, and while funniness might break the ice, it is not appropriate when it comes to job hunting.

3. REAPPLY TOO FAST
You got rejected from a job, and it is normal. The HR might send you a consolation letter, and say that you can apply for the position again. This is a trap. While the company appreciates your generic passion for the job, do not reapply too fast. Wait for a few months before applying for the job again.
