Demonstration Part 2: Civilians plan to ambush DPR building

Demonstration held by groups of students and other civilian elements had kicked off in Jakarta, precisely in front of the MPR/DPR Building. Reportedly, the demonstration would bring more people with it.

Based on the meeting between the members of the People’s Representative Council and the representative of the students, the next demonstration which would be held on Tuesday (24/9) would bring more students from other provinces.

“Tomorrow, there will be more,” said Nabil, a student representative from State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah.

The call for the demonstration was circulated through messages via social media and chat services. About 5,000 students from Central Java were said to come for the demonstration. More from West Java and Banten would also come.

The agenda proposed by these students and civilians remains the same. They went against the passing of the Criminal Code Law Draft (RKUHP), Corruption Eradication Commission Law (UU KPK) that seems to weaken the institution’s battle against corruption, Land Law Draft, and Labor Affairs Law Draft. Also, the demonstrators demand a quick solution for the forest fires.

National Committee for Agrarian Reform (KNPA) who was also involved in the demonstration also said that the demonstration also fell on the National Farmers Day which would be joined by 94 civil organizations.

Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya) dispatched 18,000 joint personnel from the police force, armed force, and municipal force to guard the demonstration. They have also set the barbed wire in front of the MPR/DPR Building.
