Dark Mode for Your Gadget: the ups and downs

There is a new trend among the gadget community: dark mode. Recently, social media, applications, and even operating systems on your smartphones and PCs try to implement the dark mode to one of their appearance options. Dark mode inverts the background color to black or dark grey and the font color to white. Hence, the name “Dark Mode”. What does the dark mode do to your gadget?

1. BATTERY-SAVING
The dark mode is claimed to save battery in your gadget since brightness is reduced. However, the effectiveness only applies to gadgets with an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen. The OLED screen has its own layer of pixels that emit its own light.

By applying dark mode, the majority of these pixels will be deactivated, saving its battery by more than 60%. Keep in mind that it will be more effective if the background is pitch black.

Smartphones such as the iPhone X and its successors and Samsung Galaxy S series are using OLED screens.

However, for gadgets with LCD screens, the feature is not that useful. LCD relies on lighting emitted by the rear or the sides of the gadget. Therefore, even though you activate dark mode, these lights are still on.

2. PLEASING FOR THE EYE
Too much brightness causes damage to the eyes. According to some, dark mode helps enhance concentration. You can look at it for a long time without having to worry about your visual health.

Aesthetically, dark mode gives a good look to your phone. With the pitch-black background and eye-catching white font, the visual is elegant.

The downside is, however, dark mode is not for everybody. For those who love quick reading, proofreading, or suffers from astigmatism.

For those who love reading or proofreading, a black background is only a hindrance when correcting a work. With a white background, the mistake is easier to find. And also for those who suffer from astigmatism, the dark mode only disrupts their vision.

WHATSAPP AND DARK MODE

However, for those who love surfing the internet at night, dark mode is helpful. Some application has already implemented dark mode in their setting. WhatsApp, however, has not implemented it yet. More precisely, WhatsApp is thinking about it.

WABetaInfo, a trustworthy source leaking WhatsApp’s new feature, revealed that the messaging service is currently developing its own dark mode, dubbed as “Dark Theme”. It is available for download in Google Play Beta Program. For its full release, WhatsApp had not revealed any specific date yet.

Once, WhatsApp had already tested dark mode, however, some users reported that the bubble chat also turned black, yet the font did not turn white.

The netizens all around the world are welcoming WhatsApp’s “Dark Theme”, saying that finally, they don’t have to worry about their eyes when opening WhatsApp at night. It is well known that while the other applications have already implemented dark mode, WhatsApp stays bright as ever. Hence, the netizens are making fun of it though memes.
