Dangerous, Transportation Agency forbids GrabWheels on the road

Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) specifically banned GrabWheels’ e-scooter on the road. The Head of Dishub Jakarta, Syafrin Liputo, explained that the ban was for the sake of safety.

Speaking on Friday in an interview, Syafrin explained that there are special lanes for e-scooters, and even, for the special lanes, permission is required from the area manager. Therefore, riding on the road is a big no.

The head of Dishub said that Dishub had already coordinated with the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya) regarding the regulation. Effective on Monday, those who use e-scooter on road will be sentenced to one-month imprisonment or fined as much as Rp250,000.

Specifically, GrabWheels are restricted from accessing the road, including the bicycle lanes because GrabWheels were considered dangerous.

In terms of users, children, wanting to look stylish, are the most frequent users of GrabWheels’ e-scooters. It is a complete far cry from the basic function of e-scooters as a mean of transportation. Should e-scooter serve as a mean of transportation, the Indonesian government is looking forward to facilitating, asserted Syafrin.

For those who already own e-scooters, the maturity levels are different as well. They are more aware of their own safety and of the proper utility of the e-scooters.

However, the ban does not mean that the Indonesian government is technophobic. Despite being banned on the road, Syafrin said that GrabWheels are allowed at several locations as long as they already pocketed the permission from the area manager. As an example, GrabWheels can be seen around the Gelora Bung Karno area, as long as they fulfill the requirement.

Actually, the Jakarta government had issued Gubernatorial Decree (Pergub) of DKI Jakarta no. 128 of 2019 regarding bicycle lanes.

Within chapter 2 verse 2 of the Pergub, it is written as well that besides e-bicycle and regular bicycle, it is written that both e-scooter and kick-scooter are allowed to access the lanes for safety reason, besides hoverboard and unicycle.

However, Polda Metro Jaya asserted that e-scooters cannot run on the bicycle lanes.

Grab Indonesia welcomed the regulations by Dishub and Polda Metro Jaya. In fact, they supported the regulation by also imposing a Rp300,000 fine on GrabWheels’ users who don’t comply to the safety regulation and standard around its operation areas.

Furthermore, Grab Indonesia stated that they would obey the regulation and adjust the GrabWheels’ operation with the recommendation from the Indonesian government while waiting for the next regulation.
