COVID infections in Tokyo up week-on-week for 16th straight day

Japan's health ministry confirmed 21,186 new cases of coronavirus in Tokyo on Wednesday. The figure is up 2,374 from a week ago.

The daily tally exceeded 20,000 for a second straight day.

The tally has marked week-on-week increases for 16 straight days.

The ministry also reported 20 deaths in the capital.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines is 44, up seven from Tuesday.

Nationwide, 206,943 new infections and 296 deaths were reported on Wednesday. The case count exceeded 200,000 for the first time since August 25.
