COVID-19 alleviating, Honda resumes work in China

On Wednesday, China announced that it would let key companies continue their works in Wuhan, Hubei Province, Central China, the ground zero of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The announcement that the battle between humans and COVID-19 in the province is showing a positive sign.

The decision came a day after the President of China, Xi Jinping, paid his first visit to Wuhan. Since late January, the capital of Hubei Province had been under virtual lockdown after China declared a state of national emergency.

In recent weeks, the number of cases in Wuhan fell significantly. For several consecutive days, Wuhan did not report any new COVID-19-related cases. Therefore, Xi was sure that Hubei Province has “basically curbed” the outbreak.

The Hubei government said that the businesses, especially those involved in providing necessities for prevention and control of the pandemic or in the public utilities, are allowed to resume works and production immediately.

One of these companies is one of the biggest Japanese carmakers, Honda. On Wednesday, Honda reported that some of its staff had continued working in its Wuhan factory, producing a small number of vehicles and checking on its production equipment. Not only Wuhan but also some regions considered high-risk.

While, for the regions with medium to low-risk, a broader range of companies is allowed to continue production. Public transportations will also gradually continue their operation. However, schools in Hubei Province are still suspended.
