Company Criticized for Paying Female Staff to Wear Skirts

A Russian company offers cash bonuses for female employee to wear skirts or dresses to work. This bonus campaign received criticisms by different parties.

The company is Tatpof, an aluminum manufacturer. They are currently having a femininity marathon campaign until June 30. In this campaign, they give cash bonuses for 100 roubles ($1.50) for female employees who wear skirts. However, the female employees need to send a picture to the company in order to receive the bonus.

Social media users in Russia are against this campaign as they think it’s a horrible way to treat a woman. Zalina Marshenkulova, a feminist blogger and journalist, wrote on her Telegram channel that the campaign is like news from the middle ages. Twitter users also criticize the company, saying it’s not an appropriate move from a big company.

Tatprof, however, denied the accusations of sexism by saying 60 women had already taken part. A spokesperson told a radio station that they wanted to brighten the work days. It’s also great way for them to unite the team, because their team is 70% male. The company stated they wanted the women to feel their femininity and charm by wearing skirt or dress.

Anastasia Kirillova, a Tatprof employee in department of corporate culture and internal communications, stated that the idea came from CEO Sergel Rachkov. She said Rachkov is very concerned about the issue of mixing gender role. He wanted young women not having male haircuts, not wearing trousers, engaging themselves in handicraft, and raising children.

The company has planned to hold a making dumpling competition in June, to see who is the quickest at making it. Last week, the company also held a pull-up contest for male employees.
