Cluster of 50 infections at a corona priority medical institution in Okinawa, 16 deaths

Okinawa Prefecture has revealed that a cluster of infected people has occurred at a prefectural hospital, a priority medical institution for the new coronavirus, and 16 of the 50 infected people have died.

This was revealed by Reiko Oshiro, director of the prefectural health and medical department, at a general question session of the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly held on March 30.

In this article, Ms. Oshiro revealed that the medical institution in Uruma City where the cluster of five infected people was announced on June 3 was the Prefectural Chubu Hospital, a priority medical institution for the new coronavirus.

He explained that a total of 50 people, including 36 hospitalized patients and 14 staff members, were infected, and 16 of them died.

The prefectural government released information on the number of infected and deceased people other than the first five infected people, without saying that they were related to the cluster at the hospital, and did not disclose the deaths of ten of the deceased.

Regarding the fact that these facts had not been made public, Mr. Oshiro said, "Since the outbreak of the cluster on the 25th of last month, investigations into the situation of the outbreak and inspections have been underway, and we have not been covering up the fact. We are in the process of confirming the wishes of the bereaved families before announcing the deaths.
