Churches in Jakarta hold online services

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) breaks its way into Indonesia, the majority of churches in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, were seen holding their Sunday services through online streaming on Sunday. The decision was a part of the action to prevent COVID-19 from breaking further.

Through its official Instagram account, one of the most notable Christian churches in Jakarta, Jakarta Praise Community Church (JPCC), also held its Sunday services online, closing its Upper Room and The Kasablanka churches. The reason behind the online service is to battle the outbreak of COVID-19.

For the JPCC-goers, the streaming services were and will be available on Sunday from 10 a.m. until Monday at 11 a.m.

Not only JPCC but Gereja Kristen Indonesia (GKI) in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, also dismissed its physical services and relocated them to online streaming. GKI also advised its congregation to stay indoors. The streaming service started at 10.20 a.m.

The streaming services are part of the order from the President of the Council of Churches in Indonesia (PGI), Ps. Gumar Gultom. Ps. Gultom said that all churches should provide an alternative for their congregation to attend their services at their homes, referring to the technological advances.

The biggest Catholic church in Jakarta, Cathedral Church, also moved its masses to online streaming to provide alternatives for people unable to come.
