Chinese smartphones join arms against Google's Play Store hegemony

Chinese smartphone manufacturers, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, have had enough of Google’s hegemony. Therefore, they teased a collaboration to make a new platform to rival the Play Store. The four companies worked under the Global Developer Service Alliance (GSDA), accessible to other Chinese smartphones.

By forming an alliance, each of the Chinese smartphone company will make use of each other’s strength in other countries: Xiaomi in India, Vivo and Oppo in ASEAN, and Huawei in Europe.

The new platform is expected to run operationally in countries where Chinese smartphones are selling well such as India, Russia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Regarding the launching date, a rumor has it that the platform will go as soon as March 2020.

However, they also put the novel coronavirus in their consideration.

The Play Store is working wonders for Google. All along, the common concept is that the Play Store is giving cash to Chinese smartphone companies. According to a statistic from Sensor Tower, globally, Google reaped $8.8 billion in revenue in 2019, just from its Play Store.

In Indonesia itself, Huawei is ready to make an impact with the respective platform. PR Manager of Huawei Indonesia, Mohamad Ilham Pratama said that Huawei is anticipating to shift to a more independent era for Chinese-based smartphones.
