Chinese phone manufacturers suffer amid coronavirus

As the novel coronavirus is raging in China, its economic growth is also at risk. One of the main businesses in China, smartphone manufacturing, is also affected by respiratory disease. Therefore, the Chinese-based smartphone begins to get rare.

The decrease in Chinese smartphone availability is due to the Chinese government’s action in limiting Chinese businesses such as stores, restaurants, and of course, factories to contain the novel coronavirus from breaking out even further.

Due to the limitation, a report from Strategy Analytics revealed that smartphone shipping in China went down by 30 percent in the Q1 of 2020.

The novel coronavirus is also expected to slow the growth of China’s gross domestic product (GDP) and consumer spending in China; hence, it affects the smartphone market in Q1 of 2020 in the Middle Kingdom.

Nonetheless, the effect is not limited to only Chinese smartphones. The other smartphones are also affected since China houses 70 percent of the factories of these smartphone giants. The extension of the Lunar New Year holiday, travel ban, and quarantine will certainly inflict damage to this industry.

The scarcity of ASUS ROG Phone 2 in India currently is the evidence of the effect of the novel coronavirus on China’s smartphone business. If China fails to contain the virus, the shipping might worsen in the next months.

Chinese-flagged smartphone company, Xiaomi, even had to postpone its Mi 10’s release date from 11 February due to the novel coronavirus. Xiaomi also did not close the possibility that the release event might be held online. Other companies such as Oppo, Huawei, and Vivo also reported negative effects due to the novel coronavirus.
