China demands apology from Denmark amid the cartoon satire

The Chinese Embassy in Denmark demanded a formal apology after a local newspaper agency, Jyllands-Posten, issued a picture of China’s national flag but modified the stars with the novel coronavirus particles. China considered it as a mockery and hurt the interest of Chinese nationals.

Through an official statement on Tuesday, the Chinese embassy poured out its anger in the local newspaper. The Jyllands-Posen was considered violating the civilized ethics and limitation of freedom of speech by offending China.

China expressed “strong indignation” and demanded Jyllands-Posten to openly apologize. The Middle Kingdom also demanded the artist of the picture, Niels Bo Bojensen, to apologize to the Chinese people.

The incident was not the first for Jyllands-Posten. The largest newspaper agency in Denmark also reaped the storm back in 2005 by issuing 12 caricatures of the major figure in Islam, Prophet Muhammad SAW. Defending itself, Jyllands-Posten said that the caricatures were meant to show freedom of speech.

Nonetheless, the Islamic people considered it blasphemy, triggering various bloody protests in various countries that killed at least 50 people.

Until now, at least 132 people had died due to the novel coronavirus. To prevent the virus from spreading even further, China locked down Hubei and its capital, Wuhan. The world was afraid of the virus since it was similar to SARS in 2003, taking hundreds of lives in China and Hong Kong.
