China bans 'uncivilized' behaviors to promote self-hygiene

The city government of Beijing said on Sunday that it bans any “uncivilized” behaviors. The ban was regulated into a new set of regulations, passed on Friday, to improve public hygiene during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In China, where COVID-19 was originated, the infection rate reached more than 82,000.

According to the information on its official website, these uncivilized behaviors, including not wearing face masks, will be fined. Moreover, the laws also require public places to set markers for physical distancing and provide communal chopsticks and spoons for shared meals.

In addition, the Chinese people will be required to dress neatly in public, not shirtless. The rules go against the “Beijing bikini” practice where men roll t-shirts to expose their stomachs in the scorching summer.

Currently, Beijing had banned a handful of uncivilized behaviors such as littering, walking dogs unleashed, public spitting and defecation, smoking in places where it is prohibited, throwing things from the high places, and many more. Fines for public littering, spitting, and defecation was increased to $28.

Those who throw their rubbish recklessly can be fined $28 while walking dogs unleashed will be fined up to $71. The police force is also encouraged to report serious offenses which may affect the social score of the perpetrators. The social score is a fledgling system that aims to assess individual actions across society.
