Children from Chernobyl to Be Flagbearers in Rugby Game

Chernobyl incident will never be forgotten. The world shows its solidarity towards all the victim of 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor explosion by inviting 6 children in Oldham, who currently live with their hosts, to Rugby Game as flagbearers.

These 6 children are set to bear flags in the Sunday rugby clash between Rugby League 1 Oldham Roughyeds versus Keighley Cougars.

Oldham Link, a local support pioneered by Theresa Novotny in Oldham, England, helped children who became victim of Chernobyl by low level exposure. Helping the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, on 26 May, 6 children – 3 boys and 3 girls, ranging from age 9 to 11 – arrived in Oldham.

During the match, Oldham Link will distribute buckets, in order to gather funds for the children who long for peace from the radiation-stricken regions. Oldham Roughyeds’ chairman, Chris Hamilton, was optimistic that the fund raising during the match will contribute tremendously to the program.

This program has been running for more than 30 years, where all abandoned children in Ukraine and Belarus – the 2 countries which got the most contamination from the explosion - are brought to stay in England for a month with a host family.

By this program, Oldham Link hope that these 6 children will receive things that they once could not enjoy in the radiated region. The local support bears all the expenses for this children, by fund raising.

Chernobyl disaster was dated 33 years ago, 26 April 1986, when nuclear plant no. 4 in Chernobyl exploded, leaving about 13 countries around 162,000 km contaminated with radioactive chemicals 4 times worse than Hiroshima-Nagasaki.

The explosion impacted the region so much, Chernobyl will not be available for habitation until the next 20,000, when the radiation has disappeared.

If the world cannot cure Chernobyl until thousands of years later, at least, take a note from Oldham Link by showing their love and support for these children’s future.
