CEO of Mozilla resigned from office

Through an article on the Mozilla blog last Saturday (29/8), Chris Beard, the CEO of Mozilla Firefox, one of the most frequently used browsers, announced that he would resign from his office no later than the end of 2019.

Starting his duty as CEO of Mozilla Firefox in 2014, he was appointed as interim CEO following the resignation of the former CEO, Brendan Eich. Eich’s resignation followed his action, donating to a political party to go against LGBT.

First becoming Mozillian in 2004, Beard became one of the icons that help the Firefox browser to topple the hegemony of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Achieving position as Chief Marketing Officer at Mozilla, Beard then left the office in 2013, just to come back next year for the CEO position.

“It is a new chapter for me, and I need a break for a while to think what’s next for me,” wrote Beard on the blog.

From the blog, Beard also announced that the post would then be taken by Mitchell Baker, the Executive Chairwoman of the Mozilla Corporation and Foundation. As a token of gratitude and appreciation, Baker also wrote an article on the Mozilla Blog in honor of the former CEO, thanking Beard for putting Mozilla on a “new & better” path.

Baker asserted that as a true Mozillian, Beard would still be included as an advisor for Mozilla's next decisions in the future.

During Beard's leadership for five and a half year, Mozilla was once developing its own operating system (OS) called Firefox OS to go toe-to-toe with Google's Android and Apple's iOS. However, the project was axed by the former CEO, calling it "not good enough".
