Canine, hope for bone cancer sufferers

The finding might lead to a significant breakthrough from the three-decade stagnancy. According to research published in the Nature Journal, Communications Biology, osteosarcoma (OS) or bone cancer suffered by canine has close properties as such suffered by humans. The research mainly explores how fast OS spreads and mutates in dogs.

The authors of the research pointed out that because the OS found in canine is similar to humans, a comparative analysis can be conducted involving canine as the prime candidate.

As a matter of fact, OS is a frequent case for canine but rare for humans. Annually, about 25,000 OS cases found in canine, compared to as many as 1,000 cases found in humans.

The researchers experimented with 59 dogs. By the multimolecular level test, they found out that OS found in canine shares some mutual genomic features with OS found in humans.

In addition, OS found in canine spreads faster at a percentage of 90%. Also, OS in canine has 2 main lethal characteristics: recurrent and mutation. While OS can be treated with surgery and chemotherapy, humans suffering from OS survives for about 5 years, while canine only survives for 2 years. The researchers noted that further analysis and exploration was required.

Thanks to the finding, comparative analyses of OS between canine and human can be done aiming to improve the quality of treatment and drug for OS sufferers both humans and canine. A win-win solution indeed.
