Budget for Formula E in Jakarta is 'ridiculous': PDIP

In the upcoming June, Jakarta aims to host Formula E. However, the budget for the event was once again come under fire by Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), especially from the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).

PDIP’s member in Jakarta DPRD, Gilbert Simanjuntak, criticized the budget that double Hong Kong’s. For your information, Hong Kong allocated Rp540 billion for the Formula E. Meanwhile, Jakarta allocated Rp1.16 trillion!

PDIP questioned the motive of the staggering amount, while Indonesia can produce its own raw material for the construction. The budget goes mostly to Jakarta Porpertindo, region-owned enterprise (BUMD) for the infrastructure sector, which proposed Rp934 billion to develop infrastructure for Formula E.

Moreover, Gilbert also questioned the revenue’s target aimed to be achieved through Formula E, besides cranking foreign tourists from the prestigious racing event. If the target is to crank Indonesia’s tourism, the distribution of the budget has to be more evenly.

Regarding financial revenue, Gilbert quoted countries that once were hosts of the Formula E. For example, Montreal, Canada, host of the 2016 – 2017 Formula E, lost instead of reaping revenues out of it.

Gilbert added that Jakarta is one of the cities with the worst gridlock. If Formula E is held in Jakarta, it will make the traffic even worse. Saving budget, he suggested Jakarta use pre-existing circuits instead of making new ones because the maintenance might cost even more.
