Boston Red Sox's Yoshida named AL Player of the Week

In Major League Baseball, Japanese slugger Yoshida Masataka of the Boston Red Sox has been named the American League Player of the Week.

Yoshida was chosen for his performance during the week from May 1 to 7. He appeared in six games and contributed to his team's eight-game winning streak, hitting .480 with two home runs and eight RBIs.

Yoshida, who is in his first MLB season, won the award for the first time. The last Japanese player to receive the honor in his first season was Suzuki Seiya in April last year.

Yoshida showed his skills at the World Baseball Classic earlier this year and helped Japan clinch the title with 13 RBIs. He has been one of the leading batters for the Red Sox since the season opener.

Yoshida is on a run of hits in 16 straight games and attention is on whether he can extend the streak when his team plays the Atlanta Braves from Tuesday.
