Bill Gates: The world is not ready for COVID-19

The founder of Microsoft and also a philanthropist, Bill Gates, said that the world is not ready for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak. The statement came as an answer to the question “What should the world do to prevent COVID-19 from reoccurring in the future?”

To answer the question, Gates referred to the statement he said on TED Talk 2015. At that time, Gates said that the world should invest in the healthcare system, not military system. Furthermore, the 64-year-old businessman said that all countries need to collaborate to train medical staff to face a viral crisis such as what the world is facing today.

Failing to do his advice, when COVID-19 struck, the world was shocked. Therefore, Gates said that the world was not ready.

Stop crying over spilled milk. Gates said that the world should invest more in improving vaccination and medicinal trials. In other words, improvement in diagnostics leads to faster discovery of vaccines and medicines. By investing in the right technology, such a goal is possible.

Investing in healthcare and research is far more important to stop epidemics and pandemics. In the future, the biggest threat will not be missiles, but viruses. Developed countries need to help developing countries in detecting viruses early.

Similar to facing avian flu, swine flu, Ebola, and Zika, Bill gates noted four important steps to face the epidemics:
1. Gather the information about the disease and its transmission,
2. Social distancing and quarantine is the final measure,
3. Research the medicine to cut the transmission and fatality rate, and
4. Research the vaccine to eradicate the disease and distribute it to those who need.
