Be careful when dealing with China: Pompeo

The United States (U.S) Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, warned the U.S governors of the risks of dealing with China. Pompeo said that the competition between the U.S and China has run to all levels of society and affect the U.S foreign policy and national security.

Speaking at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington, the Secretary of State said that the Chinese representatives might have approached the governors, showing their interests to invest in their states. Quoting the Phase One agreement taken between the U.S and China months ago, Pompeo said that the Chinese investment may be mutually beneficial.

However, Pompeo said that the Chinese are using the investment as an opportunity to spy the U.S weakness and exploit the openness of the U.S system to gain advantages.

Moreover, Pompeo revealed that a government-supported research institution in Beijing was “labeling” the U.S governors’ behavior toward China last year.

Once more, Pompeo said that the economic ties with China could be great and powerful. Yet, on the other side, it is sensitive to the U.S national security. Pompeo then mentioned China’s action in Topeka and Sacramento.

Pompeo said that China has gone backward from liberal democracy as its people aspired it to be after the end of the Cold War. Under the reign of the current President of China, Xi Jinping, Pompeo said that unfair business practices, domestic repression, and aggression in its military policy are happening.

Regarding the novel coronavirus, Pompeo revealed that the U.S had sent nearly 18 tons of medical supplies to battle the novel virus and offered to provide an additional US$100 million to China and other countries affected by the novel coronavirus.

While the President of the U.S, Donald Trump, hailed Xi's fast response toward the novel coronavirus, Beijing denied that the U.S had offered such lucrative aid.
