Banned from the Olympics, Russia is going to file an appeal. IAC doesn't want it to be like three years ago.

Banned for doping, IOC discusses Russia's participation in the 2020 Summer Olympics & Paralympics

On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee (IAC) said that it won’t discuss the details regarding the participation of Russia at the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. However, IAC said that it would wait until the final decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS); yet, no date has been confirmed.

During the IAC’s board meeting on Wednesday, IOC did not go into details of Russia’s appearance. A spokesman for IOC, Mark Adams, said that the meeting only discussed informational matters, and Russia’s appearance still waited for CAS.

The informational matters covered the size and overall appearance and uniforms for Russian athletes eligible to compete if they can prove their record clear from doping.

In December 2019, Russia extended the 2015 ban of Russia’s flag and anthem from any sporting events, including the Olympics. Not only participation, but Russia is not allowed to host or bid for major sporting events during the banning period.

Russia’s officials said the decision was unfair and sought to appeal the CAS’s decision in early January 2020.

Now, the IAC said that it wanted to finalize all the details earlier to repeat the 2016 appeal by the Russians days before competing at the Summer Olympics in Brazil.

Russians, seen as powerhouses in sports, were caught in doping scandals when the WADA report found out the mass doping in Russian athletics. Therefore, Russian athletes did not participate in the past two Olympics.

Last year, Russia’s tricolor flag was absent from the 2019 Pyeongchang Winter Games in South Korea following the doping cover-ups at the 2014 Sochi Games in Russia.
