Bakrie, BYD join arms to produce more electric buses in Indonesia

Bakrie Autoparts will collaborate with a Chinese bus company, BYD, to provide electric buses in Indonesia. Both of the companies will make a breakthrough in bus development by producing electric buses domestically.

Speaking on Friday, the President Director and CEO of Bakrie Autoparts, Dino A. Ryandi, said that the collaboration aims to produce more eco-friendly buses for retailers and TransJakarta with domestic companies. So, the body of the bus will be made in Indonesia, while the battery comes from China.

TransJakarta sets a rule that bus suppliers should also involve local components in their production line. Therefore, Dino said that the Bakrie Autoparts also holds the responsibility to improve local components in the electric buses.

The local components may be achieved if the respective brand does its assembling in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the chassis and technology are allowed to be imported from the country where the brand is originated.

Previously, BYD and Mobil Anak Bangsa (MAB) had held test-drives to fulfill feasibility for TransJakarta’s usage. The result was that the local components were feasible.

However, for the entry stage, Bakrie Autoparts still imports electric buses to Indonesia since the completely built-up bus and half completely built-up (CBU) units (chassis, battery, and motors) duties are not that different in figures. It is done while waiting for the Presidential Regulation (PerPres) on electric vehicles.

Bakrie Autoparts also aims to enhance the local components by also producing the chassis domestically.
