Between 'insensitive' and 'irresponsible' and ‘fair’, opinion divided into 2020 Olympics

On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that the 2020 Summer Olympics will go as planned amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak. The decision was welcomed with strident criticisms and harsh comments.

One of the harsh comments came from Canada, saying that the IOC’s message is “tone deaf”. The Canadian women’s hockey star, Hayley Wickenheiser, insinuated the IOC through her tweets that now no one knows whether the Olympics will be or should be canceled. However, Hayley said that if the IOC decided to go on, it would be unfair for the athletes and global population “at large”.

Hayley is also a six-time Olympian and a member of the IOC Athletes Commission.

IOC said that it wants to be fully committed to the 2020 Olympics. With more than four months to go, the IOC said that they will not make any drastic decisions. No speculation either since it would be counter-productive. IOC’s statement also came on the same day that the vice-president of Japan’s Olympic Committee, Kozo Tashima, had been tested positive for the COVID-19.

However, as the global pandemic is halting all qualifying events, shutting down facilities, and closing all travel accesses around the world, it is no doubt that the people assume that the oldest sports event in the world will be canceled.

Speaking from an athlete’s point of view, Hayley could not help but empathize with the anxiety and heartbreaks felt by the athletes right now.

However, Brent Lakatos, an 11-time world champion of wheelchair racer from Canada, said that the IOC’s statement was “pretty fair”. Brent said that there is still much time left, hence it is best to plan and re-access. As an athlete, Brent said that the athletes both for Olympics and Paralympics are used to uncertainties.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, wants to set the 2020 Olympics as an example that mankind can conquer anything, even COVID-19.
