Australian Student Detained in North Korea

The Australian government said on Thursday (6/27) that it was urgently seeking confirmation from North Korea on the fate of its citizen feared detained by the secretive regime.

The family of Australian Alek Sigley, a 29 years-old student from Perth, said in a statement that they haven’t been in digital contact with him since Tuesday, which was unusual for him not to contact them. However, they still aren’t able to clarify his detention in North Korea.

Sigley is a son of Anglo-Australian father and a Chinese mother. He is currently pursuing a master degree in Korean literature at Kim Il Sung University and running a tour company that organizes trips to North Korea for foreign students. According to his social media post in January this year, Sigley described a strong interest in East Asia and socialism—has been previously studied at Fudan University in Shanghai and at Sogang University in South Korea before moving to Pyongyang. He also recalled his first trip to North Korea back in 2012.

Leonid Petrov, a North Korea expert from Australia National University and Sigley’s friend, also describes him as a person who is highly sympathetic towards the Koreans both south and north, which made him unsure what had happened to his friend. Petrov told Guardian Australia that he tried to message Sigley via Skype but had no response from him despite being online.

In response to this, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs is now providing consular assistance to the man’s family. Finance Minister Mathias Cormann also told the media that Australian government through its embassy in Seoul has reached out to relevant North Korean officials and worked with Swedish government in Pyongyang since it has no diplomatic mission of its own in the country. Australia has also previously communicated with North Korea through its embassy in Jakarta.

Sigley’s family is hoping to re-establish contact with him soon.
