Aso receives backlashes for remarks about Japan's historical unity

On Tuesday, the Deputy Prime Minister of Japan, Taro Aso, had to explain his remark, ignoring the Ainu in his statement. Previously, Aso said that Japan had been unified under “a single language, dynasty, and ethnic identity” for the past 2,000 years. The statement came during a gathering in Aso’s home constituency in Fukuoka Prefecture on Monday.

Beforehand, the former PM hailed Japan’s success at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, a shout out for the team with diverse backgrounds.

By the statement, Aso ignored the fact that there are also ethnic minorities and even the indigenous Japanese, Ainu. Speaking at a news conference, Aso said that he had to take care of what he said that correct it.

The news conference came a day after the ignorant, controversial remark.

Aso also explained that what he meant by the “singularity” was Japan had endured a long period without any major migration movement or any occupation of other ethnic groups.

Contradicting Aso’s statement, Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, struggled to support the Ainu group in Northern Japan by passing a law in May 2019 to promote and protect Ainu’s culture from extinction.

When asked about the contradiction between his controversial remark and Abe’s policy, Aso said that he did not mean to contradict the ongoing legislation regarding Ainu.

Coming to aid Abe’s government, Aso is known to make controversial remarks.
