Apple purchases Spectral Edge, aims for a leap in photography

One of the largest tech firms in the United States (U.S), Apple Inc., revealed that it had acquired Spectral Edge, a British-flagged startup company that develops tech to enhance photo quality. The acquisition was revealed during the fillings made public on Thursday. In the document, it is revealed that Apple now controls Spectral Edge.

How much did Apple roll out for Spectral Edge? The number was classified.

Started in the University of East Anglia, Spectral Edge develops a computational photography tech that enhances photo quality – making the color more vivid - by blending data from the standard phone camera lens and infrared lens. Last year, the startup said that it had raised US$5.3 million in funding.

Hence, with the acquisition, it is getting more evident that the arms race takes on “which phone can give the best picture quality”. To satisfy its loyal customers, Apple keeps on making innovation in its photographic feature. For the iPhone 11, Apple endowed it with a triple-lens system.

It was revealed that Apple plans to put a 3-D camera for improved depth sensing and augmented reality. But, it is unknown whether Apple will implement the sophisticated Spectral Edge’s blending tech in its next iPhones.

When asked for comments regarding the acquisition and the further plan for Spectral Edge, Apple declined to comment.

Apple is also known to acquire smaller, startup companies. Although it takes a longer time for the result to show itself, Apple said that averagely, it buys a company every two or three weeks. Therefore, there might be other startup companies we’ve never heard of that had joined Apple.
