Animated film adaptation of Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's bestseller "Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window" to be released this winter

On January 19, it was learned that actress Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's (89) autobiographical story "Totto-chan at the Window" will be made into an animated film, which is scheduled to be released this winter. Although there have been TV dramas and movies related to the story, this is the first time the story has been made into a movie. Shinnosuke Yakuwa, who directed the "Doraemon the Movie" series, will direct the film.

The story of Totto-chan (Kuroyanagi), who was expelled from elementary school for being restless, is transferred to Tomoe Gakuen, a school that respects independence, where she meets her former teachers and friends. 1981, the book was published and became a bestseller, selling 8 million copies in Japan and over 25 million copies worldwide. According to Kuroyanagi, "I have received letters from almost every film director except Akira Kurosawa." She has received numerous offers to make the story into a movie, but has continued to decline them, saying that she does not want to "destroy the image that readers have in their heads.

Nevertheless, Director Yakuha visited Kuroyanagi several times with an image board in hand to make his appeal. Kuroyanagi readily agreed, saying, "If it is an animated film, fans who love the original work may be pleased with it.
