Washington DC, USA - According to John Selleck, an assistant managing director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a US diplomat named Candace Marie Claiborne, is sentenced to 40 months in prison and fined USD 40 thousand or equivalent to IDR 566 million by the government. He said that Claiborne was entrusted with special information as an employee of the US government, and she misused that trust at the expense of their country's security.

The US Justice Department said that, last April, Claiborne pleaded guilty to a plot to trick US law enforcement in an important case related to access to intelligence secrets. She also lied to investigators about money received from Chinese intelligence agents for exchanging confidential documents.

It is reported that, she interacted with two men who were agents of the Chinese Ministry of Defense according to the US Department of Justice. She claimed that they gave her tens of thousands of dollars in cash and gifts in return for documents and information about US State Department activities.

According to the source, Claiborne was a management specialist at the US Foreign Ministry office that is based in Beijing and Shanghai and in early 2007 she was involved in a scandal with two agents from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Security.

Selleck stated that targeting US security permit holders by Chinese intelligence is a constant threat they face, and Claiborne's punishment shows that those who betray the trust of US citizens will be asked for the responsibility for their actions to make sure the country’s security and safety.
