Amendments to the Law to Promote the Introduction of Renewable Energy Support local governments' efforts
The Ministry of the Environment has belended into revising the Act on the Promotion of Global Warming Countermeasures in order to promote the introduction of renewable energy such as solar and wind power. In response to Prime Minister Yoshihide Kan's declaration in his policy speech that domestic greenhouse gas emissions will be virtually zero in 2050, the government aims to boost local governments' efforts through fiscal support and institutional reforms.
A panel of experts will be set up in November to promote concrete discussions and aim to submit amendments to the regular Diet session next year. The current law is based on traditional government targets aimed at reducing greenhouse gases by 80 percent by 50. The committee will discuss improvements toward virtually zero and show a certain direction by the end of the year.
Based on the results of the study, the Ministry of the Environment will strengthen financial support for local governments working to introduce renewable energy. The main target is local governments that have set to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to virtually zero by 50 years.
