Alipay approaches Mandiri and BRI for e-wallet in Indonesia

Indonesia’s central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), stated that the Chinese e-wallet service, Alipay, aims to cooperate with PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk., and PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) (Persero) Tbk. Deputy Governor of BI, Dr. Sugeng, said that the three parties are preparing for the collaboration.

Speaking on Monday, Sugeng said that the terms had been corrected. However, the documents were still lacking and had been returned to be completed. However, the three parties have not submitted the complete documents.

Both Bank Mandiri and BRI have not clarified the matter.

Previously, Alipay was about to collaborate with PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) (Persero) Tbk. Nonetheless, the collaboration discontinued since the President Director of BNI, Achmad Baiquni, said that BNI wanted to focus on the development of its own cashless payment, LinkAja.

Sugeng added that if foreign cashless service providers want to expand their business in Indonesia, they need to comply with the Fourth Commercial Bank Based on Business Activities (BUKU IV) as written on BI Regulation No. 20 of 2018 on Electronic Money.

Currently, the commercial bank on BUKU IV processing the foreign e-wallet is PT Bank Central Asia (BCA) Tbk.

Indonesian banks both state-owned and commercial aim to start serving the transaction from the Chinese tourists this year.
