After 18 Years, "Spirited Away" Premieres in China
One of the most remarkable masterpieces made by Ghibli Studio, “Spirited Away” was finally released in China on Friday (21/6). To premiere in China, the movie had to wait about 18 years from its initial release in 2001. “Spirited Away” had to compete with the latest, star-spangled animation movie from Pixar, “Toy Story 4”.Despite being replaced by Makoto Shinkai’s “Your Name” as Japanese most grossing animation, “Spirited Away” still attracts Ghibli’s fans from the Middle Kingdom. The enthusiasm was so great until “Toy Story 4” had to give way to the movie as it reached the top box office in China. “Toy Story 4” only got US$13.2 million, while “Spirited Away” gained double the size, US$28 million! Last Christmas, Ghibli’s remastered “My Neighbour Totoro” released in China, gaining US$25 million in its premiere!
However, strident criticisms came questioning the action of Chinese theaters to give more studios for “Spirited Away” than “Toy Story 4” as a result of the Trade Wars between the US and China. But, hey, moviegoers do not care about politics. If it attracts people, that means people just love it! No political intrigues.
Nowadays, “Spirited Away” can be watched on TV with various dubbings. However, it seems that the sensations of watching it on the silver screen and on TV are on different levels. Most of the Ghibli fans around the world did cosplays antics to celebrate, but Chinese fans just entered the cinema with simplicity without any cosplay antic because they do not want to do that either. To make the premiere even livelier, Donguri Kyowakoku, an official Ghibli merchandiser, also established a stand there. People who had bought the ticket could exchange their ticket for “Spirited Away” pin.
Although the time passed by, Hayao Miyazaki’s works are proven to last the course of time.
