AfroFuture Fest Refrained From Charging White People More

AfroFuture Fest is a music festival hosted by Afrofuture Youth. The Eventbrite page for AfroFuture Fest advertised about the ticket price and it was charging white people more. The prices were $10 for Early Bird POC (people of color) Ticket and $20 for the NONPOC (non-people of color). The news of the ticket prices hit social media last week when rapper Tiny Jag said she was unknowingly added to the event and agreed to perform. However, when she knew the ticket pricing system, she didn’t want to perform anymore.

Eventbrite responded to the news by saying that they don't permit events that require audience to pay different prices based on their race or ethnicity. They had notified the creator of the event about this violation and requested price alteration. If the Afrofuture Youth doesn’t comply to their rule, they will unpublish the event completely from the Eventbrite site. The Afrofuture Youth revealed that they set such prices because white people can afford tickets to any event in any city, while black and brown people cannot.

After received all the critics, the Afrofuture Youth tweeted on Sunday night that they refrained from their decision on ticket prices. The group stated that they received threats from “white supremacists” and children were subjected to see racist comments on social media. They changed the price to $20 as general admission fee and a suggested donation for non-POC. Afrofuture Youth also wrote an explanation on Eventbrite that their events designed for marginalized people of color community. They also said that they're promoting equity over equality for black youth. The non-POC individuals are encouraged to provide additional donations as acknowledgment of this historical inequity.

The AfroFuture Fest will be held on August 3 at Detroit’s Feedom Freedom farm. Five percent of the profits will be given to Afrofuture Youth, a sponsored program of the nonprofit Allied Media Projects. The program focuses on young black people in Detroit. It aims to give space and resources to build a more equitable world to the middle-school and high-school students. Currently, the program benefits 10 children.
