Aerial collision in Spain, 7 dead

MALLORCA - On Sunday, an aerial collision occurred above Inca, the largest city of Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands in Spain and one of its most well-known tourist destination. The collision involved a helicopter and a small aircraft that happened at 1.45 pm local time.

The cause of the collision remains unknown. The helicopter was taking its passengers for a sightseeing ride when it collided with an ultra-light aircraft. As one of the most well-known tourist destinations in Spain, it is usual to see a sightseeing helicopter in the summer in Mallorca.

Francina Armengol, the President of the Balearic Islands, stated that the main priority, for now, was to identify the victims of the crash that took the lives of seven people, including 2 children. At that time, five people were aboard the helicopter. These five people were a couple with their two children and a pilot, while two people were on the aircraft.

Upon colliding, the helicopter crashed into a field and nearby rural homes in Inca, while the aircraft crashed onto a road. The collision left no survivors.

Rotorflug, a German helicopter operator, stated in an official statement that its aircraft was missing. Nonetheless, rejecting all allegations, officials of the Balearic Islands Government emphasized that the nationality had no connection whatsoever with the collision.

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, addressed his condolences for the victims of the aerial accident, referring to the accident as “tragic” and calling for actions and solidarity for the families left behind by the victims of the collision.
