Adidas recycles plastic wastes to new fabrics

Following the success of the recycled shoes collaborating with Parley for the Oceans initiative, Adidas commits itself deeper to eco-friendly sports gear by launching new fabrics made from recycled plastic wastes and polyester.

Adidas teamed up with Parley in 2015 to gather plastic on beaches and coastal regions to make more than 11 million pairs of shoes in 2019. The number was a fraction to the group total of more than 400 million. Staying committed, Adidas pledged to keep making its shoes and clothes out of ocean plastics in 2020.

The German sports gear maker will launch the “Primeblue” fabric made of Parley marine waste. Now, it is made into the popular Ultraboost series.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a charity organization that encourages business modal that eliminates waste, said that less than 1 percent of material for clothing is recycled. The small number contributed to the loss of more than US$100 billion worth of materials annually.

In 2020, Adidas aims to produce 15 – 20 million pairs of recycled shoes using marine plastics.

Actually, the recycled polyester costs 10 percent more than the virgin polyester. However, Adidas wants to bring the price down so that the consumers can afford environmentally sustainable products. For products made from 100 percent recycled polyester, Adidas will label it as “Primegreen” later in 2020.

In the United States, Adidas stated its wish to produce sustainable uniforms for Major League Soccer (MLS) and National Hockey League (NHL).

Meanwhile, Adidas’ rival, Nike, already uses recycled polyester yarn for the uppers of its Flyknit series. The action was claimed to recycle more than 4 billion plastic bottles from landfills.
