Abe to meet Xi in late December visit

Later December, the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, is expected to meet and talk with the President of China, Xi Jinping, during Abe’s 3-day state visit to China. The announcement was made by the Vice President of China, Wang Qishan, during his meeting with Japan’s national security advisor, Shigeru Kitamura, in Beijing.

Abe’s state visit to China on 23 December is to attend a trilateral summit with the other two countries. China will be represented by its Premier, Li Keqiang, and South Korea (S. Korea) will be represented by its President, Moon Jae In.

Since assuming his post replacing Shotaro Yachi, the former national security advisor in September, Kitamura is currently visiting China for the first time.

Yachi had been maintaining good relations with Yang to mend the soured Sino – Japanese relations when in 2012, Tokyo decided to annex the uninhabited Shinkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Not only Wang but also Kitamura met with Yang Jiechi, one of China’s top lawmakers and a member of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee. During this meeting, Kitamura and Yang discussed the detail about Xi’s state visit to Japan in Spring 2020.

Both Yang and Kitamura realized that the bilateral relations between China and Japan are essential, and the meeting between both officials was said to promote the stable development of bilateral relations.

Yang seems to be willing to maintain a dialogue with Kitamura; therefore, before Xi’s Spring visit, Yang is expected to visit Japan for further talks with Kitamura.
