Pope Francis urges action due to ‘climate emergency’

A global “climate emergency” has been declared by Pope Francis as a warning of the dangers of global heating resulted from greenhouses gases. He also mentioned the 1.5C temperature limit which rises that some countries are aiming for. He urged young people and businesses to take a leading role to stop such a “catastrophic” situation.

Pope delivered the statement that our future generations should not pay for our generation’s irresponsibility, and young people are calling for change in a very strong and most direct intervention on the climate crisis. His impassioned plea came as he met some of the leaders of the world’s largest multinational oil companies in Vatican on Friday. Pope warned that we are running out of time and urged the leaders to hear the desperate cries of the earth.

Chief executives of BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, ConocoPhillips and some major investors responded by putting carbon pricing to low-carbon innovation and asked for a greater financial transparency. However, all of the companies made no pledges on reducing their greenhouses.

The campaigner for Greenpeace UK, Mel Evans, said that the oil companies knew all the major risks from climate change many years before we heard about it, yet they kept quiet and do their business as usual. The companies will do what they are forced to do when it comes to saving the planet. However, it is not enough unless we block them from drilling new oil wells.
